There once were best friends named Damon and Phintias. They lived in Syracus, Sicily in the 4th century BC. They were philosophers of Pythagorean School.

One day Phintias was sentenced to death by Dionysius the Younger, the ruler of the city, for plotting against his rule. Phintias then begged for permission to go home to finish his private affairs before he’s executed. Dionysius of course refused his request. Phintias felt very hopeless. But then, Damon came to Dionysius and begged to grant Phintias’s request. Damon loyally offered to replace Phintias while he is gone. He is willing to take Phintias place in prison. Dionysius then agreed and granted their request.

Phintias was very happy and thankful for his friend’s sacrifice. He promised Damon that he would return as soon as possible. He started home as fast as he can.

Days gone by and Damon waited very patiently in jail. But until the day before his execution, Phintias had not returned. And on his execution day Phintias still had not returned. Damon knew that he had to take Phintias’s place and get executed if Phintias didn’t show up.

It turned out that Phintias had tried to keep his promise to his best friend, but he cannot. He got delayed on his way back. Phintias heart beat fast. He felt very uneasy. He feared that he would be too late, and Damon, his faithful friend would get executed because of him. Dionysius told Damon that it’s the execution day and since Phintias had not returned he had to take his place.

Incredibly, just as Damon was about to die in his place, Phintias arrived. He shouted to stop the execution. He felt so relief that his friend is still alive. He apologized to Damon for his delay. Damon said that it’s alright and he told Phintias that he trusted him. Dionysius was so impressed by this example of loyalty that he pardoned Phintias and asked to share their friendship.

Condors are majestic birds. Their average length is about 1 – 1.2 meters. And the male weighs about 11 - 15 kg. Females reproduce slowly, typically laying a single egg every two years.

They are also known to be one of the longest living species of birds. They live up to 60 years in the wild, and 70 years in zoos.

Because of their weight and size, condors are too heavy to fly without help. So, they rely on the wind.

They use warm air currents called ‘thermals’ to help them gain altitude and soar through the sky. By gliding from thermal to thermal, a condor may need to flap its wings only about once every hour. This means that they can glide over large areas using very little energy.

People think that water pollution only occurs in cities where the population is dense and there are many industrial plants. However a study indicates that small towns and villages that were once described as healthy and green areas are now polluted.

Generally, water pollution has three main causes. First, it is industrial waste containing heavy metals. The next cause is the poor sanitation, which contributes significantly to water pollution. Household waste, for example from toilets and laundry detergents, seeps into groundwater without due process. Then the groundwater acquired from drilled wells is again used for household purposes. The third is the farming waste that contains pesticides and chemical fertilizers flowing into rivers and reservoirs as well as seeping into groundwater.

It is obvious that the quality of groundwater naturally becomes worse. The industrial waste, the poor sanitation and the farming waste are the major causes of the problem.

Platypus is a native Tasmania and southern and eastern Australia. Many people call platypus duckbill because this animal has a bill like duckbill.

Platypus has a flat tail and webbed feet. Its body length is 30 to 45 cm and covered with a thick and wooly layer of fur. Its bill is detecting prey and stirring up mud. Platypus ‘eyes and head are small. It has no ears but has ability to sense sound and light.

Platypus lives in streams, rivers, and lakes. Female platypus usually digs burrows in the streams or river banks. The burrows are blocked with soil to protect it from intruders and flooding. In the other hand, male platypus does not need any burrow to stay.

The Mouse Deer and the Crocodile

The mouse deer was a very tricky animal but he had many enemies. One of his enemies was crocodile. The crocodile lived in a river near a forest.

One day, the mouse deer went to the river. It was a very hot day; he was very thirsty and dirty. He wanted something to drink from the river and then he bathed and splashed about in the water.

Suddenly, the crocodile saw the mouse deer. “Hmm….a nice meal.” He thought. Then he silently crawled behind the mouse deer and grabbed him. He caught the mouse deer’s legs.

The mouse deer was startled and terrified as well. Then he had an idea. He saw a twig floating near him. He picked it up and said, “You stupid fool! So you think you’ve got me. You are biting a twig-not my leg, you, stupid crocodile! Here’s my leg.”

And with that, he showed the crocodile the twig. The crocodile could not see very well. He was a very stupid creature, too. He believed the cunning mouse deer. He freed the mouse deer’s leg and snapped upon the twig. The mouse deer ran out of the water immediately. “Ha…ha…ha…”, he laughed. “I tricked you!”

Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming. There are several things that we can do. One of them is by buying and consuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. It of course includes local vegetables, fruits, bread, etc.

Local groceries don’t need much transportation to get it into the market. It of course means, the amount of carbon dioxide produced is less than the groceries from other region. Therefore, by buying local groceries we are helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.

Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us. Furthermore, fresh food or groceries means no requirements for it to be freeze up. It means that no electricity is needed and saving energy means reducing carbon dioxide and money.

So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global warming.
